Silk screening (serigraph) has a much older history than the mid-20th century, neither is it exclusively a contemporary art form. The use of silk in the process dates from France in the early 1800s, but a variation of the process began in China one thousand years ago. There it was used to print beautiful designs on fabric.
The silk screen technique, or serigraph, is simple. A piece of silk is stretched on a frame through which paint is pressed. A stencil applied to the opposite side of the silk "shapes" the paint, producing an image on the fabric or canvas beneath the frame. Multiple or limited colors can be used, but changing colors and stencils requires beginning the process anew each time. The end results of serigraph prints are always beautiful, and can be fascinating.
Modern artists began to use the method the 1930s. Prior to that silk screen (serigraph) techniques were limited largely to industrial and commercial printing technique. Pop Art was fascinated with commercial culture and it was natural for these artists to adopt this artistic method. They produced beautiful images with vivid colors, most famously Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe Diptych. Explore the world of silk screen on this website!
