Etching, also called engraving, is among the most unique arts techniques for making prints. It began its life as an art form in the 1500s and reached its maturity with the fine arts of Rembrandt in the 1600s.It is a relatively simple printmaking method.A metal plate is covered with acid resistant varnish. The artists uses a sharp tool to carve an engraving into the plate and then soaks the plate in acid. The acid eats into the carved metal to deepen the engraving. The plate is then cleaned, inked, and pressed with paper, thus transferring the engraving to paper. Then, the printing is complete.Any number of prints, from a signed edition to an unsigned print, can be made after the first prints are made, but often an artist creates a limited edition of signed prints.Contemporary art is not without its etchers who know printing techniques inside and out.
